Why won't my portable DVD player display the films in my ipod?

I have a film in my ipod but my portable DVD player will only give the sound. Why won't it show the picture on its sreen? This DVD player has an ipod docking station. My ipod plays movies. It's the DVD player that won't play them. It gives the sound only.
